Boonville, NY: The Gateway to the Adirondacks and Tug Hill

For generations, Boonville has  had a reputation for being a rugged and resilient part of Central New York. Located at the foot of the Adirondack Mountains and perched on the Tug Hill Plateau, Boonville is a community defined by its deep snow, historic waterways, and a “neighbor-first” work ethic. At Matt Nimey GMC, we are proud to be part of this legacy, serving drivers who need vehicles as tough as a North Country winter.

A Legacy on the Black River Canal

Boonville’s identity was forged in the 1800s with the construction of the Black River Canal. Today, you can still feel that history at the Boonville Black River Canal Museum, located at the site of the former Titus Powers Iron Works. The museum preserves the “locks and towpaths” era that put Boonville on the map at that time.

Just a short drive from our dealership, the Boonville Historic District showcases stunning 19th-century architecture, including the Erwin Library and the Pratt House. These landmarks, along with the iconic Hulbert House (which has hosted everyone from Ulysses S. Grant to Buffalo Bill) serves as a constant reminder that this community is built on a foundation of good old fashioned integrity and endurance. We are also the presenting sponsors of the Boonville Fair.

Life in the Snow Capital

If there is one thing about Boonville that plays a part in our lives, it’s the weather. As a primary hub for the Tug Hill region, we have learned to embrace the elements. The Black River Canal Trails and BREIA (Black River Environmental Improvement Association) trails offer world-class cross-country skiing and hiking for locals and adventurous visitors.

Community Spirit and Heritage

Every winter, the town transforms for the Boonville Snow Festival, featuring the world-famous Adirondack Cup Ice Oval Racing. This event draws thousands of snowmobile enthusiasts, proving that in Boonville, snow is worth celebrating.

Boonville shifts during the summer months and puts its attention on warmer weather activities like the Boonville-Oneida County Fair, a local tradition since 1888. It remains one of the premier agricultural fairs in the state, featuring a very popular demolition derby and obligatory tractor pulls that reflect our local hometown grit.

We are also the proud home of the NY State Woodsmen’s Field Days, an international competition that honors the timber and forestry industries so vital to our region. From the logging trucks on Route 12 to the families visiting Pixley Falls State Park, the spirit of Boonville is one of hard work and outdoor adventure.
